4-H Canine Science Virtual Workshops

Have you ever wanted to have a conversation with your dog?

These workshops will be a six-week series of weekly webinars 
where you can learn about canine science and understand your dog better.
Workshop participants will get an intro to some exciting dog sports 
from VA Tech researchers and learn about animal behavior.

You can also earn AKC Virtual Trick Dog Titles and recognition through VA 4-H.

Workshops are intended for youth 12 - 19 years of age.  
Webinars will be held on Wednesdays 2 pm - 3 pm starting April 8 and ending May 13.  
Webinars will be recorded and placed on a Google drive 
for those wanting to watch at different times.

UPDATED Culpeper Soil and Water Scholarship

Graduating 2020 Seniors! Here is another scholarship for you! Check out the Culpeper Soil & Water Conservation District's Academic Scholarship. If you are majoring in a field related to conservation like agriculture, environmental science, conservation biology, etc you're eligible!


The following accommodations will be accepted this year:
  • Unofficial transcripts, either from the school or printed out from the student's online account.
  • Pictures or scans of the application since it is hard to go to the post office these days. You can also send the application via several regular sized envelopes so that you don't need a special envelope. 
  • Recommendations: students can list the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of their references without having to send the actual letters. I will contact them myself. 
The application, transcripts, reference letters, and essay are due on Monday, March 30, 2020 to CSWCD.

Virginia Grain Producers Association Annual Scholarship for Undergrads and Graduate Students | Due May 1, 2020

Here is another scholarship opportunity! The Virginia Grain Producers Association (VGPA) offers a $1,000 scholarship to undergraduate and graduate students attending Virginia Universities. High school seniors, you're eligible too if you're attending school this fall! The deadline was initially the beginning of April, but we have extended it to May 1st.  Go ahead and apply now! All you need to do is fill out this form below, have two references, SAT/ACT scores and a transcript!

2020 Dairy Month Poster Contest | Due May 20, 2020

Participate in the 2020 June is Dairy Month Poster Contest
Theme: “The Art of Dairy”.
There are so many things you can do with this theme. Let your imagination go wild.
This year's poster must be done on 8 1/2" x 11"' card stock.
Due May 20, 2020 to your local Extension Office

• Where? You may participate in your local community.
• Why? To learn more about milk and milk products and their importance to human health.

• Who can participate? Every bona fide Virginia 4-H member. Age groups Junior: 9 to 11 years old as of September 30, 2020 Intermediate: 12 to 13 years old as of September 30, 2020 Senior: 14 to 19 years old as of September 30, 2020. 

1.Use slogan and stick to theme.
2. Newspaper and film cartoon characters may not be used.
3. Posters must contain only original, hand-drawn artwork done by the participant. Computer-generated artwork and text are not acceptable and will result in disqualification of the poster.
4. Do not attach items thicker than the card stock to the poster.

Scholarship opportunity- VA Farm Bureau Young Farmers

High school juniors and seniors, here is another scholarship opportunity for you!

The purpose of the Outstanding Young Agriculturalist Award is:

To recognize High school junior or senior students for outstanding academic, community and agribusiness achievement. (must be a junior or senior on March 31 of the year of competition).

To encourage students to evaluate their progress and career goals.

To stimulate the student’s interest in striving for leadership opportunities and involvement in agriculture and/or the agribusiness sector.

Judging and Deadline
**Application must be completed and submitted by March 31 to:
VFBF Women’s and Young Farmers Dept., PO Box 27552, Richmond, VA 23261**

Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated by judges to select district finalists by early
May. All applicants will be notified of standings by mail or e-mail; finalists will be given additional
instructions for the state competition at that time.

The Oral Presentation will be required for finalists competing in the state contest.
Finalists will compete for the state title at the Young Farmers Summer Expo held in late
July to early August with competition location to be announced at a later date.

Awards and Recognition:

The state winner will receive a cash scholarship of $1,500 including: $250 from Virginia Farm
Credit Associations, $500 from VFBF Service Corporation under the GM Incentive Program, &
$750 from the VFBF Young Farmers & Women’s Committees.

All finalists and parents, if desired, will have hotel and meal expenses covered during the
Young Farmers Summer Expo event. Competition will include making your presentation and
answering questions from judges during a 10 minute interview process.

Each finalist, other than the state winner, will receive a $100 award from Virginia Farm Credit
Associations and $100 from VFBF Service Corporation under the GM Program.

Virginia Association of Fairs County Fair Youth Video Contest 2020

Why are Fairs and/or Festivals important to your community?

This new contest gives youth an opportunity to create a video to highlight the theme above.
There are two age divisions for youth to compete in, Junior Youth: Age 9-13 and Senior Youth: Age 14-19. Videos should be a minimum of 1 minute 30 seconds and a maximum of 2 minutes 30
seconds. Videos under or over the time allotment will be docked for points based on the
contest rubric. Videos will be judged based on: Video Quality, Story Content, Story Impression, Audience Impact, and Creativity.

Selected videos will be showcased at the State Fair of Virginia in a designated location
during Fair Week. Signage will direct State Fair attendees to the video display area.

Contest Finalists will receive four one-day admission tickets to the State Fair of Virginia.
Additional tickets can be purchased at the gate upon entry.

Winners will be announced prior to State Fair Week and awards will be mailed and/or
picked up by the recipient.

Awards for both Junior Youth and Senior Youth divisions are:
• 1st: $100 cash prize from VAF, certificate and SFVA Prize Pack
• 2nd: $50 cash prize from VAF, certificate, SFVA Prize Pack
• 3rd: $25 cash prize from VAF, certificate, SFVA Prize Pack
• 4th: Certificate and SFVA Prize Pack
• Best use of Technology: Certificate, SFVA Prize Pack

2020 Virginia Junior Beef Round-Up: Entry System Open

The 2020 Virginia Junior Beef Roundup will be held in conjunction with the Virginia Beef Expo, April 16 – 19 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg.  Virginia youth are invited to enter and participate in the cattle shows and showmanship on Saturday, April 18th and Sunday, April 19th.  A full schedule for the weekend is can be found below. 


Information on the VA Beef Challenge, Team Fitting, Team Sales, and Youth Discussion Meet competitions will come later. 

The entry system for the cattle and showmanship divisions, via FairEntry, can be accessed at this link:   The system is open and accepting entries
  • 4-H members should use their 4HOnline credentials (email and password) and use the GREEN “Sign In with 4HOnline” button to enter the system.  If you are a 4-H family that is not familiar with the 4HOnline enrollment system, please contact your local 4-H agent to confirm that you are enrolled using 4HOnline.
  • FFA members should use the BLUE “Sign In” button, logging into an previously created FairEntry account or create an account to enter the system
  • Older youth (19-21 years) who are showing registered cattle as members of their respective breed associations should also use the BLUE “Sign In” button

  • The ownership deadline for all entries and deadline for having all registered cattle (including Bred and Owned entries) registered, transferred, and in the name of the exhibitor is March 31, 2020 – these dates are verified through each of the respective breed associations and the ISSUE DATE by the association is the date used.
  • Calves at side of Dam must be bred and owned, and registered in the name of the exhibitor by March 31, 2020
  • There will be a Bred and Owned Division/Show offered for each of the respective breeds, including AOB.  Designation of  a heifer being Bred & Owned must be made during the entry process.
    • A minimum of 10 head of qualified Bred & Owned heifers is required for a separate division (then broken out by traditional class age breaks)
    • Less than 10 head of Bred and Owned cattle will result in a Bred & Owned Class at the end of that respective breed show
  • Percentage cattle bearing a registration certificate from a breed association, but ineligible to show in that respective breed’s national or regional shows, will be shown in the commercial/crossbred heifer division.
  • Stalling requests are located at the beginning of the entry system.  ONLY STALLING REQUESTS SUBMITTED VIA THE ONLINE ENTRY SYSTEM WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Please take time to completely read the rules prior to completing the entry process.  Each exhibitor will be asked to acknowledge during the entry process that they have read and understand the rules.


Entry Deadline is Monday, April 6th at 12:00 Noon with a $25 entry fee, payable online by credit card or mailed check.  Late entries will be accepted from 12:01 pm, Monday, April 6th to 12:00 noon on Friday, April 10th, with a $50 entry fee – ALL LATE ENTRIES MUST BE PAID ONLINE BY CREDIT CARD.

2020 Northern District Livestock Show | May 30, 2020

The Northern District Livestock Show which is scheduled for May 30, 2020 in Culpeper. Entry forms must be postmarked by April 30 with late entries accepted until May 7 at double entry fee.  All forms must be signed by an Extension Agent to verify 4-H membership and must have a Health History form attached.
