District Contest | Greene County, VA | March 30, 2019

The District Contest is coming up quickly! This contest is for presentations, public speaking, Share-the-Fun, extemporaneous speech, radio spot, table setting, and horse communications. Registration closes Friday, March 22, 2019.

The event will be Saturday, March 30, at Nathaniel Greene Elementary School, 8094 Spotswood Trl, Standardsville, VA 22973. This is a great way to improve your skills and even gain All Star points for a district-level contest.

March 5 Deadline for Declaring Interest in Tractor Operators Contest

Excitingly, we've had some local interest in the 4-H Tractor Operators' Contest. The state contest will be Thursday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m. in Harrisonburg. We can send two youth from Orange. If we have more than two people interested, we will hold a local contest as a qualifying event to determine our state representatives.

The contest consists of a written exam, identification of tractor parts, operating a 30-60 horsepower tractor with a two-wheel implement attached, and operating a tractor with a four-wheel implement attached. Please review the complete rules at

If you wish to participate as an Orange 4-H youth in the tractor operators' contest, contact the Extension office by Tuesday, March 5. This will determine our next course of action.

Virginia Tech Livestock Judging Field Day and Camp | April 27 | July 15-17, 2019

Virginia Tech Livestock Judging Field Day and Camp are coming up soon! The field day will
be on April 27th and camp will be July 15-17, 2019. Both events will be held on the Virginia
Tech campus in Blacksburg.  

Field Day on April 27th includes basic instruction on the evaluation of beef cattle, sheep, and
swine followed by practice classes. Attendees will be allowed to evaluate classes together at
their own pace. Classes will be followed by an official critique. The cost is $25, which includes
lunch. The registration deadline is April 12, 2019.

Livestock Judging Camp will take place July 15-17, 2019. This 3 day event provides detailed
instruction in evaluation of beef cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats, and reasons. A half day will
be devoted to each species.

Camp is open to youth entering the 6th grade to High School Seniors. Registration is limited
to the first 60 youth registrations. Attendees do not have to be accompanied by a chaperone.
Attendees will receive instruction in junior, intermediate, and senior groups. Full registration for
youth attendees is $270 and $190 per adult. Full registration fee includes housing in air
conditioned dorms, all meals, camp judging manual, t-shirt, and bowling at Squires Student
Center. They are offering a commuter registration fee for groups that do not wish to stay
in dorms on campus. The registration deadline is June 21, 2019.

Cloverbud Day Camp Dates Released! | Summer 2019

We've confirmed our dates for Cloverbud Day Camp! Camp will be taking place on July 22-25 from 9am-12pm at the Research Station here in Orange. This camp is for children ages 5-8 and will be a great opportunity for them to learn and have fun! Registration opens on Monday, April 1, 2019. Spots are limited, so be sure to sign up when registration opens!

Some things we are looking for include someone who possesses strong oral and written communication skills, good organization and planning skills, and can work effectively to build relationships with others. Code Your World | Computer Science Workshop | March 16, 2019

Do you have a 4-Her who is interested in computer science?

4-H participants will have the opportunity to learn computer science from experts at VSU on March 16th!

Code Your World is a four-part challenge that teaches kids to apply CS to the world around them through hands-on activities. This opportunity is open to youth between ages 8-14.

Host Families Needed! | Traveling Opportunities for 4-H Alumni | International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE)

Have you ever thought of being a host family? 
This year Virginia is hosting 3 IFYES (ages 19-25) who will be in Virginia for three months. Host families are needed for 2-3 weeks for each of the IFYES. Most of the incoming IFYES are from Europe, Asia, or Greece. These international visitors usually arrive beginning in June and through the summer.

Please let us know if you have families interested in hosting. It’s a great experience for the entire family. 

Have you ever wanted to travel to another country? 
4-H alumni ages 19-25 have the opportunity to apply to travel to another country through the IFYE program.  The 2019 IFYES will spend a few months in one or more of the following countries:

Costa Rico

Please let us know if your family is interested in hosting an international visitor for a couple weeks or if you're a 4-H alumni interested in participating in the IFYE program. This is a great experience for everyone!

U.S. Department of State Announces International Scholarship for Undergraduates

Are you an undergraduate student looking to study or intern abroad? This opportunity is for you! The Gilman Program provides scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to study and intern abroad, including students from diverse backgrounds, academic fields, institution types, and those going to non-traditional destinations. 

The application for upcoming summer, fall, and academic year programs are NOW OPEN. The deadline to apply is March 5th at 11:59pm Central Time. Applications for next spring and early summer are accepted August through October. 

Approximately 3,000 scholarships were given out last academic year.

New Contest! Youth Ag Discussion Meet Comes to Virginia

Orange County Fair Announces Two College Scholarships

The Orange County Fair Association is accepting applications for two $500 scholarships until April 12. The application is available online (click here) and due to the OCHS Counseling Center. We thank the fair board for this wonderful opportunity for youth.

Master Gardeners Announce Scholarship for Graduating Senior

The Rapidan River Master Gardener Association is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Culpeper, Orange, Madison or Greene county that is pursuing a degree in Horticulture and/or Agriculture. Guidelines for the student and an application are available online. Homeschool students as well as private and public school students are eligible.
The deadline for the application is Friday, April 5, 2019.

4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference to Be Held March 30 in Williamsburg

The Southeast District Association of Adult 4-H Volunteer Leaders is hosting the 2019 Spring Conference of the Virginia Association of Adult 4-H Volunteer Leaders (VAA4-HVL) at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel and Suites, Williamsburg, Virginia, March 30-31.  The theme is “Celebrate the Past, Embrace the Future.”

The conference is for all of 4-H volunteers, extension agents, program assistants, district/state staff and a few sessions may be interesting to youth 4-Hers. The conference will provide the opportunity to learn new skills and receive training to improve 4-H activities across the Commonwealth.

We will be holding a silent and live auction during the conference.  Donations of items are greatly appreciated for these events!  All proceeds will go towards supporting programs to train and educate 4-H adult volunteer leaders so that they can promote and provide support for Virginia 4-H programs.

Cooking for Crowds Class to be Held in March

The Orange Farm Bureau's Taking Pride in Agriculture Scholarship is accepting applications from Orange high school seniors until March 27. Camp Woods & Wildlife

Camp Woods & Wildlife (formerly known as Holiday Lake Forestry Camp)

The Virginia Department of Forestry, in cooperation with natural resource conservation agencies and organizations, has proudly administered Holiday Lake Forestry Camp....
now named Camp Woods & Wildlife for more than 70 years.  
This unique camping experience has introduced young Virginians to the challenges, special skills and knowledge needed for managing the forest resources we use and enjoy every day.

Camp Woods & Wildlife will be held June 17-22, 2019.  
Camp will be held at the Holiday Lake 4-H Education Center in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest.  This working forest provides a vast outdoor classroom for interactive learning.
